NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Algonquin Thunder defeated the Sheridan Bruins today 3-0 during quarter-final action in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Championship at Nipissing University.
Today's match (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) was close but largely lead by Algonquin. The first set was quick and the score nearly even. The second set saw Algonquin take an early lead and continue to put pressure on Sheridan. The third set saw Sheridan keep the score even frequently. However, Sheridan did not lead the set after an initial eight-all tie.
Algonquin's Player of the Game award went to outside hitter Alexandre Corsi-Caya (Ottawa) who posted 14 kills and two serving aces for 16 offensive points. Teammate Joshua Harris, an outside hitter from Kitchener, Ont., made 13 kills and one stuff block. Sheridan's Player of the Game was setter Jessy Satti (Mississauga, Ont.) with one kill and the team's only serving ace.
Algonquin (19-1) finished the regular season first in the OCAA East conference and seventh overall in CCAA rankings behind the fifth place Nipissing Lakers and first place Humber Hawks. Sheridan (10-8) completed their regular season fourth in the OCAA West.
Sheridan's left side Jeremy Fantin, who won the OCAA Men's Volleyball Rookie of the Year award, made five kills and five stuff blocks in his first OCAA playoff game. Fantin lead Sheridan with 214 points, 160 kills, eight serving aces, and 3.2 points per set in the regular season.
Algonquin's coach Doug Anton won the OCAA Men's Volleyball East Division Coach of the Year award this year.
Sheridan has not earned an OCAA Men's Volleyball medal since winning six straight titles ending in 1994. Algonquin last won an OCAA title three seasons ago in 2009.
Algonquin will move on to play the host team Nipissing Lakers tomorrow at 8 p.m. in semi-final action. Sheridan will play Durham tomorrow at 3 p.m.
