NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Seneca Sting defeated the Redeemer Royals in four sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23) today during bronze medal quarter-final action in the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Championship at Nipissing University.
Today's match saw Seneca control play for much of the first two sets.
In the third set, Redeemer refused to quit, battling back from a 13-8 deficit to build an 18-14 lead and forcing a time out. The Royals would carry their momentum forward, staking a 25-21 win to force a fourth set.
The fourth set was marked by some very long rallies, with both teams making nice plays to keep the score close before Seneca pulled out the win.
Seneca was led by OCAA East Division second team all-star Predrag Gajic, with 20 kills, and OCAA East Division first team all-star Peter Christian, with 20 points on 16 kills, three stuff blocks and one service ace.
Redeemer's Eric Heidbuurt recorded 15 points on 12 kills and three stuff blocks, while OCAA West Division second team all-star Dave Klomps recorded 11 points on nine kills and two service aces.
Christian was named Seneca's player of the game. Heidbuurt was named Redeemer's Player of the Game.
In opening round action yesterday, Seneca was narrowly defeated by the Mohawk Mountaineers in five sets; Redeemer lost to Humber in three sets.
