SENECA 3, LA CITE 0

Coming off an 18-2 record, most would accept a slight drop off in wins, but not this Seneca Sting men's volleyball team. After a memorable 2011-12 campaign which saw the team finish fourth at the OCAA Championship, this team has come back even hungrier as they chase that OCAA championship. Following a three-set sweep of the La Cité Coyotes Saturday evening in The Hive, the Seneca Sting have rolled their record to an impressive 4-0, good for top spot in the OCAA East.

Seneca used a balance attack which saw contributions from five starters offensively while keep the Coyotes off-balance with strong serving all night.

The first and third sets were mirror images of each other as Seneca controlled the play throughout the sets. At no time was La Cité able to string together points to seriously challenge the undefeated Sting as Seneca rolled to matching 25-19 wins.

The middle frame was the most competitive on the court, but lopsided on the scoreboard. The Coyotes looked poised to even the match at one set apiece as they clung to a 14-13 lead. Sting outside hitter Matt McGirr went back to serve and before he rotated from the serving position, the score was 19-14. Following two successful rallies, McGirr showed off his jump serve with an ace off the receiver's arms. This led to a timeout which did little to stop the momentum. McGirr's fourth serve was returned right back to the Sting side on an over-bump which allowed the home side to set up their offence. The fifth serve mirrored the fourth, but unfortunately the Coyotes defence was able to stop the bleeding with a key block. Seneca would go on to win the set 25-18.

As noted, Seneca received offensive contributions from five different players offensively.  Vladyslav Danyliuk, McGirr, Predrag Gajic and Jordan Darlington all had six kills while Nick Coleman wasn't far behind with five. Darlington played big in the middle with five blocks. Libero Gabriel Harrietha had four digs for the Sting on the evening.

For the visiting Coyotes, Keith Marier had 11 kills while teammate Cederic Crete had seven kills and one stuff block. Nicolas Bedards had an impressive 13 digs.

The Seneca Sting (4-0) will travel to play George Brown (3-1) Tuesday at 8 p.m. while the La Cité Coyotes (2-1) will travel to play Georgian (2-1) tomorrow at 2 p.m.
