TORONTO - The second semi-final game of the day at the belairdirect OCAA Women's Basketball Championship was between St. Lawrence Vikings and the Mohawk Mountaineers. The game started out as a close affair with each team getting on the scoreboard early.
St Lawrence jumped out in front 10-9 at the end of the first. Lacey Knox established herself early getting seven of those points.
The next quarter the Mountaineers built up a lead ending the half 32-25. Jakayla Douse contributed 10 for Mohawk. In the third quarter Mohawk opened up the lead and showed their dominance outscoring St Lawrence 19-7. In the final quarter, Mohawk increased its lead even further scoring 27 points to St Lawrence's 19 points winning the game by a 13-point margin by a score of 71-58.
The St. Lawrence Vikings player of the game was Haley Gorder who scored six points grabbed three rebounds while dishing out two assists. Knox scored a game-high 18 points. Mohawk's JenJen Abella was named Mohawk's player of the game contributing 13 points and hitting a big three-pointer late in the fourth quarter. Jakayla Douse finished with 15 points and was Mohawk's high scorer. She also grabbed 13 rebounds in the campaign.
Mohawk now faces division rival Humber in the gold medal championship final. Humber has defeated Mohawk both times during the regular season. In their first contest in the season opener the Hawks were victorious by a score of 82-77. Conversely the two teams met again on the last game of the regular season. Humber was victorious once again winning the game by a score of 82-53. Mohawk will seek revenge in the contest that means the most for the season, while Humber will set out to prove that it was named division champions for a reason.
Tip-off is set for tomorrow, Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at Centennial College Progress Campus AWC inside the DEL Gym. This final match-up of the season is sure to please.
