OCAA HONOURS ITS TOP BADMINTON STUDENT-ATHLETES

TORONTO - Monique Lee of George Brown College and Timothy Lock of Humber College are the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Badminton Players of the Year.

Lee (Hong Kong), a second-year student-athlete and former OCAA mixed doubles champion, partnered with Giselle Kochapanya (Toronto) in women's doubles earlier this month at east regionals and went 4-0 in the competition. The Women's East Division Player of the Year, Lee is also an East Regional All-Star.

Lock (Newmarket), a first-year student-athlete, ran the table in men's singles play at west regionals with a 5-0 record. The Men's West Division Player of the Year is also a West Regional All-Star.

Humber's Chloe Rowe is the OCAA Coach of the Year. The four-time OCAA medalist led the Hawks to a men's team title at west regionals, and second-place finish for the women. Humber student-athletes finished in first place in men's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles. The West Division Coach of the Year is also the nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year.

Devika Kumar (India) of Conestoga College is the Women's West Division Player of the Year. A second-year student-athlete, Kumar is the defending OCAA women's singles champion. Earlier this month, Kumar went 4-0 in women's singles play at west regionals. Kumar is also a West Regional All-Star.

Colin Zhou (China) of Centennial College is the Men's East Division Player of the Year. A second-year student-athlete, Zhou is the reigning OCAA and national champion in men's singles. Zhou went 6-0 in men's singles at the recent east regionals, and is also an East Regional All-Star.

George Brown's Will Schram is the OCAA East Division Coach of the Year. The Huskies finished in third place in both the men's and women's team standings at east regionals, and have doubled their participants at this week's provincials to six compared to three last year.

Student-athletes who finished in first place at their respective regionals in their respective disciplines are named OCAA All-Stars. Joining Lee, Kochapanya and Zhou as East Regional All-Stars are Ranjana Bhatt (Scarborough) and Roney Roy (India) of Centennial; Kent Ayco (Toronto) and Henry Chan (North York) of George Brown; and Moti Shams (Iran) of Seneca Polytechnic.

In addition to Lock and Kumar, West Regional All-Stars include Sadik Ali (Kitchener) and Marla Betts (Sudbury) of Conestoga; Arpitraj Sinha (Markham) of Fanshawe College; and Fred Houle (Elliot Lake), Glorinelle Questin (Brampton), Dhruvkumar Raval (India) and Ayushi Vasava (India) of Humber.
