OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham College's Janna Hagan was
named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's
fastball player of the year in a ceremony held at the Quality Hotel
and Conference Centre in Oshawa, Ont. on Thursday evening.
The Sherwood Park, Alta., native posted a league-best .577 batting
average with 15 hits in 26 plate appearances, was the co-leader in
runs scored with 12 while contributing nine RBI. Hagan is a member
of an undefeated Lords teams who compiled an 8-0 regular season
record.
The third-year outfielder was also honoured as the OCAA's top
batter in 2011, and named an OCAA all-star. Hagan's Durham College
hosts the 2011 OCAA women's fastball championship beginning
Friday.
Durham first-year hurler Shannon Galea was named
the OCAA's top pitcher for 2011. Galea was the league co-leader in
wins, compiling a perfect 4-0 record. The Oshawa, Ont., product
struck out 31 batters in 24 innings. Galea allowed four earned runs
on 17 hits and two walks for a stellar ERA of 1.50.
Durham swept the top player awards with Jenna
Dupuis being named OCAA rookie of the year. The catcher
went 14-for-28 for a .500 average at the plate this season. Dupuis,
from Whitby, Ont., scored eight runs and had 10 RBI. She also
caught the OCAA's top pitching staff, with a team ERA of 0.94.
Bill Smith of St. Clair broke the Durham deadlock
on major women's fastball awards, being named OCAA coach of the
year. Smith led the Saints to a 7-1 record, good for second place
in the OCAA. St. Clair's 60 runs scored and 20 runs allowed were
also second-best in the league. Smith is in his 10th season as
Saints coach.
A pair of Smith's players, Lisa Ternosky and
Keri Bagley, were named OCAA all-stars. Ternosky
led St. Clair with a .480 batting average, going 12-for-25. The
second-year student-athlete also scored 10 runs while contributing
six RBI. Bagley was the top run producer for the Saints with 11
RBI. The fifth-year player went 8-for-26 at the plate for a .308
average. Both women are from Windsor, Ont.
Brandy Hillar and Lauren
Armstrong of the Conestoga Condors were also named OCAA
all-stars. Hillar, from New Hamburg, Ont., went 15-for-32 at the
plate for a .469 average. The second-year shortstop also scored
seven runs while driving in eight. Armstrong, from Wyoming, Ont.,
led Conestoga with 11 runs scored. The second-year outfielder went
11-for-34 at the plate for a .324 batting average.
Humber's all-stars include Jessica O'Quinn and
Ashley Cosgrove. O'Quinn was strong with her bat
and arm this season, going 8-for-26 at the plate for a .308 batting
average. She also scored six runs, and drove in six. The Etobicoke,
Ont., product was among the OCAA co-leaders in wins with a 4-1
record, striking out 18 in 31 innings pitched. She allowed 10
earned runs on 40 hits and 12 walks for an ERA of 2.90. Cosgrove of
St. Catharines, Ont., was O'Quinn's battery-mate and a leader on
the first-year Humber team that had a record of 5-5. Cosgrove
scored two runs and contributed one RBI, batting .238 for the
year.
Stephanie Duffin and Nicole
Leitch are Mohawk's OCAA all-stars. Duffin went 9-for-32
for a .281 batting average, scoring six runs while driving home
two. The Hamilton, Ont., outfielder also pitched 8 2/3 innings for
the Mountaineers. Leitch, an infielder from Erin, Ont., led all
Mohawk hitters with 18 hits, seven RBI and a .529 batting
average.
Amanda Boismier and Victoria
Tumanguil were named OCAA all-stars for Seneca. Both
contributed at the plate and from the pitcher's circle. Boismier
led the Sting with 10 RBI. She batted .440, going 11-for-25 at the
plate, and scored four times. The Windsor, Ont., product also led
Seneca in strikeouts with 22 in 19 innings pitched. Tumanguil, from
Brampton, Ont., went 10-for-34 at the plate, scoring eight runs
while knocking home three. She pitched a team-high 32 innings,
striking out 15.
Joining Hagan as Durham's other OCAA all star is Kristin
Servinis from Whitby, Ont. The second-year second baseman
went 9-for-25 at the plate for a .360 average. She scored 12 runs
and drove in three.
