ST. CLAIR SWEEPS MAJOR OCAA FASTBALL AWARDS

TORONTO - The St. Clair Saints were the big winners at the 2013 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Home Run Sports Women's Fastball Championship banquet on Thursday night.

The biggest prize went to Alexa Georgiou (Windsor) as the 2013 OCAA women's fastball player of the year. Georgiou was simply dominant from the pitcher's rubber this season, leading the OCAA with 11 wins (compared to no losses), 10 complete games, 74 2/3 innings pitched, 91 strike outs and a 0.94 ERA. She also earned one save. Her exploits also garnered her the OCAA top pitcher and league all-star awards.

Georgiou was also reliable at the plate with a .340 batting average, going 17-for-50. She drove in 16 runs while scoring 14 times. She also led the OCAA in doubles with eight.

St. Clair teammate Skyler-Dawn Patteson (Guelph) was honoured as the OCAA's top batter. Patteson led the OCAA with 27 hits and 23 RBI. She went 27-for-53 for a .509 batting average, and scored 17 times. She is also an OCAA all-star.

Amelia Maniuk (Oil Springs) of the Saints is the 2013 OCAA rookie of the year. Maniuk scored an OCAA-high 22 runs, and almost equaled Patteson's total in hits with 26, batting .481 in a league-high 54 at bats. She also contributed six RBI.

First-year head coach Doug Wiseman is the OCAA coach of the year. Under his guidance, St. Clair had the league's best record at 14-1, setting the team record for wins in a season. The Saints began the season on an 11-game win streak, and outscored the opposition 112-33.

Each team nominates two OCAA all-stars. Joining St. Clair's all-stars are Stephanie Baril (New Hamburg) and Tori Taylor (Kitchener) of Conestoga College; Laura Arbour (Whitby) and Hope Eagleson (Plattsville) of Durham College; Olivia Crossley (Brampton) and Jacqueline O'Quinn (Etobicoke) of Humber College; Nicole Leitch (Acton) and Becky Rabchuk (Oakville) of Mohawk College; and Nicole D'Anjou (Pickering) and Krista Owczar (Peterborough) of Seneca College.

The 2013 Home Run Sports OCAA Women's Fastball Championship takes place Friday and Saturday at Wildwood Park in Mississauga, Ont.
