SENECA 6, MOHAWK 3

TORONTO - Coming off of their best offensive performance of the season, the Seneca Sting continued to swing the bats with confidence, defeating the Mohawk Mountaineers 6-3 in the second game of their doubleheader.

The Sting entered the doubleheader having scored just one run in three games on the season.  After exploding for 10 runs in the opening game, Seneca continued to put the ball in play in the second game, totaling 13 hits, including six in a four-run sixth inning.

Mohawk once again opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as the first three batters reached base. Following an RBI double by Nicole Leitch, Sting pitcher Lauren McLaughlin settled in to retire the next three batters, all by pop fly with none leaving the infield.

The Mountaineers added to their lead in the third inning. Steph Duffin led off the inning with a single and then stole second base. She was hit home by Nicole Cain to lead 2-0.

The first two batters were retired in the bottom of the third, but with two outs in the inning, the Sting were able to record three consecutive singles by Nicole D'Anjou (Pickering), Krista Owczar (Peterborough) and Lindsay Ballance (Napanee). The single by Ballance scored D'Anjou to pull the Sting within one run.

Seneca tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI by Renee Tulk (Whitby) under the lights at Newnham Campus Field.

In the sixth inning, Mohawk took the lead 3-2, only to see the Sting score four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Natalie Chiarotto (Lefroy) led off the inning with a single. Following an out, the next six batters reached base including a two-run double by D'Anjou. The Sting sent nine batters to the plate in the inning and took a commanding 6-3 lead into the seventh inning.

Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out the final two batters for the win.

D'Anjou led the team, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and singles as well as two RBIs and a run scored. McLaughlin went 2-for-3 while Owczar batted 2-for-4. McLaughlin allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out four and walking one.
