SENECA 10, MOHAWK 4

SENECA 10, MOHAWK 4

TORONTO - An extra day of practice devoted to batting did wonders for the Seneca Sting on Tuesday night as they pounded the Mohawk Mountaineers for 10 runs on 18 hits in a 10-4 win in the first game of their doubleheader.

The Mountaineers jumped on the Sting early in the game, loading the bases with no outs in the top of the first. A two-out single by Jenn Van Dyk gave Mohawk a 2-0 lead as Sting pitcher Krista Owczar (Peterborough) nearly pitched out of the based loaded jam.

The Sting took control of the game from there, scoring five runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. A pair of singles by Victoria Whidden (Mississauga) and Tina O'Donnell (Scarborough) followed by a triple by Nicole D'Anjou (Pickering) evened the score before a sacrifice fly by Owczar gave the team a lead they would not relinquish.

Owczar shut the door on the Mountaineers batters until the seventh inning, allowing just three hits and no runs during the five-inning stretch. Meanwhile, the offence was clicking, scoring in five of the six innings.

Aggressive base running put pressure on the Mountaineers all night long as the Sting were a threat to steal a base, advance on a wild pitch or sacrifice fly. In the second inning, Whidden reached on a single, advanced to second on a fielder's choice, reached third on a wild pitch and then scored on a single to shallow left field by D'Anjou for the team's sixth run.

Whidden finished the game going 4-for-4 with four singles, scoring twice and adding an RBI.  D'Anjou went 3-for-4 with a triple and two singles while also scoring twice. Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville) had three hits and two RBIs.

On the mound, Owczar pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (two earned) while giving up eight hits and walked five.

Van Dyk was the top hitter for the Mountaineers going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Niki Grover took the loss for Mohawk.

The Sting get back in action on Friday as they host Humber at 7 p.m. at Newnham Campus Field.  The Mountaineers will host the Durham Lords on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. start.
