OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

OCAA IN THE KNOW: WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

NO-NO

The first no-hitter of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) women's softball season was thrown by second-year hurler Alanna Gilmour (London) on Sunday in Fanshawe's 5-0 win at Seneca in the second game of a doubleheader.

Gilmour threw a complete game seven innings, striking out 10 Seneca batters. Gilmour was near perfect, allowing just one walk.

It was that kind of day for Fanshawe pitching. The Falcons won the opener 10-0 on a five-inning one-hitter by fourth-year athlete Lydia Kalbfleisch (Moorefield). She struck out six while walking just one.

Fanshawe is on a five-game winning streak.

THEY'RE GOING STREAKING!

Along with Fanshawe, St. Clair has also strung together five straight victories, as both teams are tied for the longest current win streak in OCAA.

Meanwhile, Humber has won four straight. As a result, all three teams are currently in post-season position, all sitting in the top four of the OCAA standings.

St. Clair is the first to reach 10 victories with a 10-4 record, while Humber has the best win percentage (.889) at 8-1. Fanshawe is 7-4, a half-game behind Durham (7-3).

Defending champion St. Clair hosts Humber in a doubleheader in Windsor on Sunday in two games that will have a significant impact atop the standings in the OCAA.

MARATHON WOMEN

Regulation women's softball games are between five and seven innings in length, depending on whether the 10-run mercy rule is invoked.

Durham and Humber showed no mercy in the second game of a doubleheader between the teams last Saturday. Humber rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-11 lead, only to have Durham tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.

The game went 11 innings before a team would score again. Humber swept the doubleheader with a 13-12 win.

RUBBER ARM

For a pitcher, one seven-inning complete game is pretty impressive. Two in one day? That's the stuff of an ace.

Second-year pitcher Allison Telfer (Windsor) threw a combined 14 innings for St. Clair in a doubleheader sweep of Conestoga. Telfer allowed five runs on 15 hits and two walks, striking out three.

Telfer has thrown the majority of the pitches on behalf of St. Clair this season, with 55 1/3 innings of work. She has an impressive 1.90 ERA that has resulted in a 7-2 record and one save.
