BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Mohawk Mountaineers stunned the host Humber Hawks 10-4 at the OCAA Women's Softball Championship presented by belairdirect at the Brampton Fairgrounds on Friday, Oct. 20.

The Mountaineers guaranteed themselves at least a bronze medal in the championship, their first medal since 2010.

Mohawk player of the game Shanien O'Neill had two home runs and Sarah Bell whacked a grand slam to power the team's 11-hit attack.

The Mountaineers grabbed a 3-0 first inning lead, then scored six times in the fourth. They led 10-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Humber put together two run-scoring triples and one single which drove in another run, but Mohawk was well in control.

Another key in this game was the pitching of winner Aimee Leduc. She was the hurler earlier in the day when St. Clair whitewashed Mohawk 10-0 in five innings. It was the third consecutive time they were 'mercied' this week. They also had it happen in both ends of a twin bill to end their regular season and ironically it was Humber who did it to them.

Meanwhile, Leduc, in her fifth and final year of eligibility, showed what a workhorse she is, pitching back-to-back games. She set the all time record for innings pitched this season and while she got loads of offensive support against Humber, it was still an amazing performance. Leduc had to scatter 13 hits, four of them by Humber's Meaghan Murphy. She fanned six. Leduc also helped her own cause with two hits and two runs scored.

The Mountaineers will face the loser of the St. Clair-Durham contest, Saturday at 10 a.m. The loser of Saturday's game gets the bronze and the winner will play for the gold medal, at 1 p.m.

It's a double knockout championship, so it's possible they may require an extra game, which would be played at 3 p.m.
