TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Nov. 24.
Janelle Albert
School: Fanshawe
Program: Business Marketing
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
Albert led Fanshawe to back-to-back 3-0 victories at home this weekend. Against second place Mohawk on Nov. 23, Albert tallied 23 points and an impressive kill percentage of .519. The following day versus Sheridan, Albert once again had 23 points, including 10 service aces. The reigning provincial and national Player of the Year currently leads all OCAA players averaging 6.2 points per set, two points better than her closest rival. The No. 4 nationally-ranked Falcons are currently 8-0 this season and are riding a 30-match win streak against OCAA competition.
Michel Ayotte
School: Boréal
Program: Electrical Engineering Technician
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Val Thérèse, Ont.
After injury forced him to miss his team's last match, Ayotte returned to the Boréal line-up and led his squad to a straight sets win over crosstown rivals Cambrian on Nov. 20. Ayotte was a dominate force in the match earning 22 kills, one service ace and two stuff blocks in a 25-point effort. Chipping in five digs on the defensive side, the Boréal captain continued his strong season for the Vipères. Ayotte currently leads his team averaging 4.5 points per set, currently sixth among all OCAA players. Boréal heads south for games at Sheridan and Humber this weekend.
Alex Bartmann
School: Humber
Program: Justice Studies
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Uxbridge, Ont.
Bartmann helped the Humber Hawks pick up two crucial wins on the road - including a come-from-behind victory over nationally-ranked St. Clair on Nov. 24. In two matches, the third-year setter recorded 75 assists and now leads the league with a 9.55 assists-per-set average. In a straight sets sweep over Conestoga on Nov. 23, Bartmann became Humber's all-time assists leader and now has 822 dimes in 39 career matches. With the victories, Humber improved to 4-2 on the season and are in the thick of a tight race for second place in the West Division standings.
Brayden Stoffers
School: Redeemer
Program: Business Management
Year of Eligibility: 3
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Frankford, Ont.
Stoffers is off to a torrid pace to start the 2019-20 season. Averaging 5.0 points per set (third in the OCAA), the third-year outside hitter was once again fantastic on Nov. 22, scoring 26 points in four sets. More impressive was that it came against the No. 10 nationally-ranked Niagara. Redeemer won the match 3-1. Stoffers finished with 19 kills on 32 attempts with just three errors. Stoffers was deadly from the service line as well, recording seven aces. The victory propelled the Royals to 6-1 on the season with a home meeting with Conestoga set for Friday.
Christian Tabiri
School: George Brown
Program: Plumbing Techniques
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Tabiri was stellar for George Brown over the weekend, helping push the Huskies into the No. 1 ranking in the OCAA. On Nov. 23, Tabiri shot a red-hot 77 per cent, shooting 10-of-13 from the floor and finishing with 23 points as George Brown defeated Loyalist 84-61. He also gathered 10 rebounds and four assists for a double-double. His strong and reliable play continued the following day against St. Lawrence. Tabiri would again turn in a high shooting percentage hitting 10-of-15 from the floor (24 points) with three 3-pointers, while also collecting five rebounds.
Andrea Zulich
School: Durham
Program: Sport Management
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Sudbury, Ont.
Zulich, a fifth-year guard, has made a major impact in her first season with Durham including another exceptional performance on Nov. 20 when the Lords defeated Centennial 83-56. An incredibly efficient night, she scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including going 5-of-8 from behind the three-point line. Zulich added nine rebounds, four of which came off the offensive glass, two steals, and one assist in the dominant win. She is currently first on the team in minutes (32.8) and second in points (13.7), rebounds (7.3), and steals (3.3) per game.
