OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Feb. 5.

All OCAA Stars of the Week will receive an acrylic bag tag courtesy of Nothers, the Preferred Awards Supplier of the OCAA.

Derick Breukelman
School: Redeemer
Program: Environmental Science
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Burlington, Ont.
Breukelman led the Redeemer Royals to a pair of important victories over the Sheridan Bruins and Conestoga Condors this past week to improve to 10-7 on the season. In the two matches combined, Breukelman recorded 37 kills, five blocks and four service aces for 46 total points. Breukelman also contributed four digs. The first-year outside hitter ranks in the OCAA's top 10 with 239 points, 183 kills and 28 service aces. Redeemer closes the regular season at Humber on Thursday before playing in an OCAA championship qualifier later this month.

Jessica Joensen
School: Durham
Program: Paralegal
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Brooklin, Ont.
Joensen became Durham's all-time points leader on Feb. 1 at Seneca. Joensen finished the match with 20 points, registering 18 kills, a dozen digs and a pair of service aces. Unfortunately for Joensen and the Lords, Durham suffered its first defeat of the regular season in four sets, ending a 14-match winning streak. The Lords got back in the win column on Feb. 4 against Centennial, as Joensen contributed 14 points on nine kills, three service aces, two stuff blocks and a dig in three sets. Joensen now has 802 points in five OCAA seasons, all with Durham.

Devika Kumar
School: Conestoga
Program: Mental Health & Substance Use
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: India
Kumar was unstoppable at the OCAA west regionals this past weekend in Sudbury. The first-year student-athlete ran the table with a record of 6-0 in women's singles competition, all in straight sets, easily qualifying for the OCAA Badminton Championships in Aurora later this month. Kumar was a huge contributor to the Conestoga Condors women's team placing second at the event. Kumar will now look to do what no other Conestoga student-athlete has done before, winning the OCAA women's singles gold medal.

Isabelle Rivest
School: Cambrian
Program: Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Sturgeon Falls, Ont.
Rivest did it all for the Cambrian Golden Shield this past weekend. The fifth-year setter tallied 40 assists, 11 kills, 30 digs, three service aces, two blocks and 16 points in a pair of matches at St. Clair and Fanshawe. Despite Rivest's best efforts, the Golden Shield came up short in both matches. Rivest ranks in the OCAA top 20 in assists, assists per set, service aces, service aces per set, digs, digs per set and blocks. The Golden Shield close out their regular season at home this weekend with matches against the Niagara Knights and Conestoga Condors.

Arpitraj Sinha
School: Fanshawe
Program: Commercial Flight & Aviation Leadership
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Badminton
Hometown: Markham, Ont.
Sinha was an OCAA silver medalist in men's doubles last season, going on to win a bronze medal at nationals. Sinha has opted to fly solo this season, and so far its been clear sailing. Competing at the OCAA west regionals this past weekend in Sudbury, Sinha breezed to a 6-0 record in men's singles competition to secure another trip to OCAA provincials. Sinha's efforts help give the Fanshawe Falcons the men's team title. Sinha will now face five other competitors at the OCAA Badminton Championships in Aurora later this month.

Joel Sloots
School: Mohawk
Program: Architectural Technology
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Hamilton, Ont.
Sloots and the Mohawk Mountaineers won two matches this past week over the Conestoga Condors and Niagara Knights and have now won three consecutive. Sloots combined for 16 kills in the two matches on a .414 kill percentage. The second-year outside hitter was especially hot in a straight sets sweep over Conestoga on Feb. 1 with a swing percentage of .636. Sloots also added two services aces, five digs and three blocks. Sloots is averaging 2.4 points per set for a Mohawk team that is 10-7 and has its sights set on the post-season.
