OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Sept. 25.

Noah Collins
School: Lakehead Orillia
Program: Business Administration
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Golf
Hometown: Midland, Ont.
Collins impressed on the links, highlighted by a pair of birdies, for a third-place finish at the Georgian Grizzlies Invitational at the Heritage Hills Golf Club in Shanty Bay on Sept. 22, carding just three strokes over par for a score of 75. It was an OCAA personal-best for the second-year golfer, and a best-ever finish for the golf program at Lakehead Orillia. Collins and the Thunderwolves now set their sights on the 2022 OCAA Golf Championships taking place on the Battlefield course at Legends on the Niagara in Niagara Falls from Oct. 2-5.

Brandon Deans
School: Humber
Program: Police Foundations
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
After earning a huge win over St. Clair to begin the 2022 campaign on Sept. 11, Deans took the mound on Sept. 20 in another road start, this time against Seneca. Deans was firing on cylinders and struck out the side through the first two innings. The fourth-year right-hander also proceeded to strike out the side in the fourth and fifth inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Deans blew a fastball by Roberto Pagliero, recording strikeout No. 16 to set a new OCAA single-game record. Deans is also the OCAA league-leader with 26 strikeouts.

Samantha DeHaan
School: Mohawk
Program: Nursing
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Smithville, Ont.
DeHaan has become one of the top goalkeepers in OCAA, making key saves that led to a draw versus the nationally-ranked Humber Hawks and a 1-0 win over the Niagara Knights. In the match versus the Hawks on Sept. 21, DeHaan allowed an early goal but proceeded to make four saves to keep Mohawk in the match. The second-year student-athlete followed that performance with a seven save shutout versus the Knights on Sept. 23 that included crucial second half saves. The Mountaineers have yet to lose a game this season with two wins and three ties.

Anyssa Hill
School: Seneca
Program: Early Childhood Education
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Women's Softball
Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.
Hill helped lead the Seneca Sting to their first doubleheader sweep in eight years. Leading off both games on Sept. 21 against Mohawk, the second-year outfielder had five hits including a double, scoring four times while driving in a pair of RBI. Seneca won the games 15-5 and 12-3. Overall in four games last week, Hill was 7-for-13, scoring six runs with five RBIs and a pair of walks. Hill has a respectable .317 batting average in a dozen games. At 3-9, Seneca has already equaled its win total from last season with 12 games to play.

Liam Oates
School: Centennial
Program: Automotive - Motive Power Technician
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Men's Baseball
Hometown: Brampton, Ont.
It has been a season of no-hitters, with Oates now getting in on the act. The first-year right-hander went a complete-game five innings, allowing one run on two walks while striking out three in Centennial's 19-1 victory over Lambton on Sept. 24. Oates is the third OCAA pitcher to hurl a no-hitter this season, joining Humber's Aidan Murphy and St. Clair's Brock Whitson. Oates is among the leaders with a 3-0 record, 18 innings pitched, a 1.17 ERA and 14 strikeouts. The Colts have a 7-3 record, Centennial's best record in two seasons on the OCAA baseball circuit.

Jaime Pye
School: Durham
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Soccer
Hometown: Oshawa, Ont.
Pye, a first-year striker, scored twice on the road on Sept. 23 as nationally-ranked Durham shut out St. Lawrence by a 2-0 score in Kingston. With Pye's goals in the 26th and 67th minutes, the Lords now sit first place in the East Division at the halfway mark of the regular season with a 4-0-1 record totalling 13 points. Durham has scored 18 goals, conceding just one. It was the second consecutive match where Pye scored a pair of goals. Durham looks to keep its momentum rolling to begin the second half of the season with a Wednesday road tilt against Loyalist.
