OCAA STARS OF THE WEEK

TORONTO - The following student-athletes have been recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) for their accomplishments during the seven-day period ending Sunday, Dec. 4.

All OCAA Stars of the Week will receive an acrylic bag tag courtesy of Nothers, the Preferred Awards Supplier of the OCAA.

Madelyn Berg
School: Niagara
Program: Business Administration - Human Resources
Year of Eligibility: 4
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: St. Catharines, Ont.
Berg surpassed a significant milestone in Niagara's first semester finale on Dec. 3. The fourth-year libero surpassed 600 career digs in Niagara's 3-1 loss at St. Clair. Berg recorded a match-high 25 digs to reach a career total of 604. Berg currently has 111 digs so far this season, good for third among all OCAA student-athletes. Despite its recent loss which ended a six-match winning streak, Niagara enters the holiday break with a 6-3 record, good for fourth in the West Division, but one game behind second place St. Clair and Conestoga.

Tsinat Geremew
School: Seneca
Program: Pre-Health Sciences
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Basketball
Hometown: Ottawa, Ont.
Geremew led the Seneca Sting to a 68-61 win in their final game of the semester over crosstown rival Centennial on Dec. 3. The first-year forward topped the Sting with a first-OCAA career double-double, scoring 19 points and adding 10 rebounds along with an assist, steal and four blocks against the Colts. Geremew is tied for second among all student-athletes with nine blocks in seven games. Geremew and the Sting play their next regular season game in the New Year against the same Centennial Colts at home on Jan. 10.

Jake Gomes
School: Humber
Program: Management Studies
Year of Eligibility: 5
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Oakville, Ont.
Hawks senior Gomes recorded a fourth career double-double, finishing with 22 assists and 10 digs in Humber's straight-set sweep over the Sheridan Bruins on Dec. 1. Already Humber's all-time leader in service aces, Gomes finished the match tying a season-high with seven and now sits with 144 - the fourth-most in OCAA history. The two-time All-Canadian now sits 24 aces away from second all-time and is the OCAA co-leader with 28 heading into the December break. Gomes and the Hawks return to OCAA play in Sudbury on Jan. 14.

CJ Okeke
School: Georgian
Program: Civil Engineering Technology
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Volleyball
Hometown: Nigeria
Okeke led the Georgian Grizzlies to two big road victories this week over the Seneca Sting and Canadore Panthers to finish off the fall semester a perfect 9-0 record. Okeke had nine kills and 15 digs in a four-set win against the Sting on Nov. 30 and then tallied a dozen kills, three blocked shots and 10 digs in a four-set win over the Panthers on Dec. 3. Okeke is currently second among all OCAA student-athletes averaging 4.1 points and 3.41 kills per set. Okeke and the Grizzlies go into OCAA hibernation until Jan. 11 when they host Canadore.

Jaque Ronquillo
School: George Brown
Program: ASL & Deaf Studies
Year of Eligibility: 1
Sport: Women's Volleyball
Hometown: Toronto, Ont.
Ronquillo has been instrumental in propelling the George Brown Huskies into second place in the OCAA East Division. In George Brown's 3-1 victory over the Seneca Sting on Dec. 3, Ronquillo had 25 kills on 46 attempts along with 11 digs, leading all scorers with 27 points. The week prior, Ronquillo finished with 23 points and 11 digs in a five-set thriller victory over the Canadore Panthers on Nov. 26. The first-year outside hitter currently leads the OCAA at the semester break in kills with 168 and kills per set at 4.94, racking up 181 total points.

Mark Stoop
School: Durham
Program: Mechanical Technician - Elevating Devices
Year of Eligibility: 2
Sport: Men's Basketball
Hometown: Oshawa, Ont.
Stoop was a force in the paint with a career-high 19 rebounds in a 79-70 road win against the St. Lawrence Surge on Dec. 2. Stoop had set a career-high one game earlier on Nov. 26 with 15 rebounds in a 109-89 win over La Cite, surpassing that quickly. Stoop was second on the team in points against the Surge with 17, shooting 8-for-9 from the field, including draining one three point attempt. Additionally, Stoop recorded two blocks and an assist. Stoop is averaging 11.3 rebounds in four games played. Durham sits atop the East Division with a 8-1 record.
