GLENN NAMED NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR

Darrell Glenn, the 2009 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year, has been named as the 2009 Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year. This honour was announced on Thursday night at the CCAA Men’s National Basketball Awards Banquet, which was held at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, British Columbia.

Coach Glenn led the Hawks to a 19-2 record and the OCAA Provincial championship this season, his third title during his five year career as head coach of Humber. This season also saw the Hawks run off an eighteen game winning streak, one which is still alive as they march into the national championship tournament.

Darrell and the Hawks coaching staff had to deal with a number of ups and downs this year as key injuries and some unforeseen player movement took hold. It was a testament to his coaching that the team not only competed through the tough times, but actually got stronger every game.

His involvement in the sport of basketball has taken on a national flavour over the past few years. He was a coach for Canada’s Bronze Medal winning team at the 2006 Under 21 World Championships. He also helped guide Canada’s entry in the 2007 World University games which were held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The CCAA Coach of the Year Award is not foreign to the Humber men’s basketball program as legendary Hawks coach Mike Katz won the honour twice, in 1995 and 2003. Darrell mentored under the wing of Coach Katz prior to taking over the lead position in the 2004/05 season. His career head coaching regular season and play-off record sits at 82 wins and 12 losses, good for a winning percentage of .872.

“Darrell’s efforts over the past five years have kept the Humber men’s basketball program at the forefront of the sport in Canada”, says Humber Athletic Doug Fox, “Three provincial titles in five years is a great run, and I know that a national title could be right around the corner”.
