HUMBER 96, MOHAWK 68 (FINAL)

ETOBICOKE, Ont. - The Humber Hawks opened their season at home against the Mohawk Mountaineers, defeating the Mountaineers by a score of 96-68.

The early minutes of the game made it look like this would be a close battle between the Hawks and Mountaineers. At one point the score was tied at 12, but Akeem Sween and Jeremy Alleyne put a couple threes on the board to break open, what would eventually become, a scoring frenzie for the Hawks. Humber didn't hold back on the offense. Near the end of the first quarter, made a pretty give-and-go-alley-oop play that had the crowd on their feet. The Hawks would finish the first quarter up six points on the Mountaineers.

The second quarter is when the Hawks really set themselves apart from the struggling Mountaineers. They tallied the most points in this quarter with 32. The Hawks used this confidence boost to try some tricky and fancy plays. Early in the quarter Adrian Tomlinson received a cross-court pass which he then one timed to Mike Dvorak rushing to the basket. Dvorak would get fouled on the play and sink both free throws. Daviau Rodney also got creative. After stealing the ball from a failed Mountaineer pass, he then gave a no-look pass to Mark Perrin below the basket. At the end of the second quarter, the Hawks lead 60-30 over the Mountaineers.

The Hawks were quiet at the start of the third quarter. Following three quick baskets by the Mountaineers, it seemed as though Mohawk was making a push to close the gap between them and the Hawks, but that moment was short. Rodney scored from behind the three-point line to put the Hawks back into their scoring ways. The Hawks entered the fourth quarter leading 79-45.

Humber kept the game simple in the fourth quarter. They used the heavy lead to allow time for everyone on their roster to get playing time. They continued to apply offensive pressure but, instead of shooting at opportune times, made passing plays to keep their focus. The Hawks didn't break the 100-point mark, but they did take the game by 28 points.

The final score was 96-68.

The player of the game was Akeem Sween.

Jeremy Alleyne led the Hawks and the game with 16 points. Mark Perrin and Rodney Daviau both had 15 points.

Mark Perrin was also 4-for-4 on free throws.

"It was a disappointing result," said Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker. "We didn't compete in the first half and they made a lot of shots. A 33-8 second quarter (for Humber) did us in."

Alex Reis led the Mountaineers with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Manny Campbell had 16 points, while Tanner Lane and Aminu Bello scored nine each.
