ANCASTER, Ont. - The turn around continues for Redeemer's
basketball program as the men's team announces their recruiting
class for the 2012-2013 season. New head coach Jamie
Girolametto has secured an impressive incoming group of
men's basketball players as the team continues to strengthen
heading into the summer months.
Among the top players that have committed to attending Redeemer
University College in the fall are:
CALVIN TURNBULL - 6-foot-3, 210 lbs. forward from
Nelson H.S. Calvin played the past two seasons for the McMaster
Mauraders while studying Economics. He played 10 years in the
Burlington Panthers club system. Although undersized for a forward,
Calvin is extremely strong and has outstanding footwork. He has the
ability to guard all five positions and is a tremendous rebounder.
Calvin is entering into the Bachelor of Education program.
COLLIN HAALBOOM - 5-foot-9, 185 lbs. guard from
Highland S.S. Collin was an outstanding two-sport athlete (football
and basketball) coming out of high school, but knee injuries in his
senior years limited his exposure and was therefore not recruited.
While working on a Honours Degree in Communication Studies, Collin
covered the McMaster Maurader games as a radio broadcaster. In
2010, Collin made the Maurader team as a walk-on. Collin is
entering the Bachelor of Education program.
Coach Girolametto notes: "Calvin and Collin
were the first two players I approached once I learned of the head
coaching position job. They will be vital in re-creating a culture
of defence and toughness at Redeemer. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching
them in the past (both at Mac, Collin in Grade 9 at St. Mary's as
well), and look forward to watching them have the opportunity to
excel at Redeemer."
KEVIN MAYNARD - 6-foot-5, 190 lbs. forward from
Westmount H.S. Highly recruited in grade 11, a serious concussion
sidelined Kevin for the Grade 12 season. Slowly rounding back into
form during his rep season with Blessed Sacrament, Kevin averaged a
double-double while leading his team to a D2 silver medal. A
three-time team MVP at Westmount, this Health Science major has
chosen Redeemer for his journey to become a neurologist.
RYAN MAYNARD - 6-foot-8, 230 lbs. forward from
Bishop Tonnos C.S.S. After an absence from basketball, Ryan made
the team as a walk-on for the McMaster Marauders in the 2011-2012
season. He played in all preseason games, and won the prestigious
Liam Stevens Award for perseverance. Ryan graduated from McMaster
University with a B.A. in Geography and will now be entering the
Bachelor of Education program at Redeemer.
Coach Girolametto notes: "We are
extremely excited to work with Ryan and Kevin over the next two
years. The years of training with Coach Amos Connolly at McMaster
will prove to be very valuable. It will be very nice to have both
brothers Ryan and Kevin playing for the Royals and for the
Maynard's to see their sons play together on the same
team."
JOSH DE SCHIFFERT - 6-foot-6, 230 lbs. forward
from London District Christian S.S. Josh has tremendous potential
for his playing career at Redeemer. He will add depth to the team.
Josh led his team through WOSSAA and into the quarterfinals at
OFSAA, losing 62-58 to the eventual champions.
IAN FARQUHARSON - 6-foot-3, 185 lbs.
guard/forward from Bluevale H.S. Ian will be attending Redeemer for
a one-year Pre-Engineering program. He will help round out the team
for the 2012-2013 varsity season and will be relied on to add depth
for the Royals.
The men's team will continue to take shape for the upcoming
2012-2013 competitive season as new recruits continue to be
added.
