ST. LAWRENCE (K) 86, DURHAM 56

Both St. Lawrence women's and men's basketball teams held their first home game of the 2012-13 season on Wednesday, November 14. The Vikings faced the Durham College Lords from Oshawa.

The Vikings women's team played first, and took the lead right away scoring a quick five points within the first 20 seconds of the game. SLC forced Durham to turn the ball over and the Vikings capitalized each time. St. Lawrence College kept pressuring Durham the entire first quarter and led 34-16. Durham would respond in the second quarter, but the Vikings stayed right with the Lords, maintaining their lead.

At the start of the second half, SLC led the game 52-32 and focused on limiting the chances for Durham.

"We wanted to have a stronger effort on team defence, and the girls did just that limiting Durham to only nine points in the third quarter," said St. Lawrence head coach Remy Simpson. The Vikings would continue to play a dominating game, and win 94-51.

Jessica Cetoute scored an impressive 28 points while bringing down 11 rebounds, leading her team in both categories. Team co-captain Lacey Knox continues to perform at the highest level as she scored 26 points and had six rebounds.

Just like the women's game, the Vikings men's team started their game in a dominating fashion against Durham, leading after the first quarter 34-16. St. Lawrence would let Durham back into the game mid-way through the second quarter, but responded well by shooting extremely well 20-of-38 (52 percent) in the half.

In the preseason, the Vikings were letting up in the second half and wanted to make sure it did not continue in the regular season. On Wednesday night, the Vikings played a great second half that included scoring 24 points in the third quarter alone. The score proved too much for Durham, and St. Lawrence went on to win by 30 points, 86-56.

"Terence (Thomas) was lights out for us tonight, he scored 31 points and had five rebounds," said St. Lawrence head coach Barry Smith. "They guys let up in the second quarter and we were lucky that we didn't fall behind. Against top teams in the OCAA, it will certainly cost us."

The next home game takes place this Saturday, November 17 against Centennial College, with the women's team playing at 2 p.m., and the men's game at 4 p.m.
