MOHAWK 77, SAULT 60

The Mohawk men's basketball team has clinched a spot in the OCAA championship at Seneca College February 28 to March 2.

The Mountaineers upped their record to 15-3 with a 77-60 victory over Sault College Saturday (Feb. 16) at the Fennell Gymnasium.

Alex Reis scored 21 points for Mohawk. Pat Iavarone had 13 points, Xzennis Brereton scored 12 and Taylor Dowhaniuk had nine points, 11 rebounds and one blocked shot.

"It's nice to accomplish one of our goals which was to get the bye to the OCAA's," said Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker. "Now we hope to continue our run and good play going into the championships."

The Mountaineers face Algoma University Sunday afternoon (Feb. 17) at 3 p.m. at the Fennell gym. Mohawk is two points behind Sheridan in the West Region. The Bruins, 16-2, beat Lambton 97-48 Saturday and play St. Clair Sunday.

Meantime, the Mohawk women's team continued its fine play with a 73-29 win over Sault College Saturday. Lacey Wolters had 16 points and nine rebounds, Cynthia Mosca scored 10 points and had six rebounds and Carissa Browne added 10 points as well.

"It was a great win for us," said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy, "because not only did it put us in fourth place, but it clinched our first playoff berth in several years, which was goal number one when we started the season. The league is so close and so tough, the last four games have all been must-win playoff type games for us and playing with this type of pressure will serve us well in the future."

Mohawk was able to roll its bench and get many players time on the floor and touches at the offensive end.

The Mountaineers, with a record of 9-7, including four wins in a row, entertain Algoma Sunday at 1 p.m. The Thunderbirds, from Sault Ste. Marie, are flying high at 14-2.
