HALIMOV NAMED CCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Vadim Halimov of the George Brown Huskies is the 2014 CCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Year.

It caps off an extraordinary season for the fifth-year guard, who became the OCAA's all-time leading scorer (1,903 points), OCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Year, and broke the conference record for points (624) and free throws (162) in one season.

"Vadim's a strong candidate. He's strong for points, earned double-figures in rebounds, and also excelled in academics," says Jeff Harris, CCAA men's basketball convenor.

Halimov was also an all-star at three tournaments this year, has a 3.96 GPA and is the recipient of an athletic scholarship.

The George Brown Huskies went 15-5 in the regular season, ranked second in the OCAA East Division and qualified for provincials.

The other candidates were Osman Barrie of the Crandall Chargers, Dominyck Coward of the Lethbridge Kodiaks, Brody Greig of the Langara Falcons and Tevonn Walker of the Vanier Cheetahs.

Halimov received the award Wednesday, Mar. 12 at the CCAA national championship awards banquet at the 2014 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship in Squamish, B.C.

Player of the Year winners receive a customized CCAA ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.

The CCAA is a national sport organization that enriches the lives of student-athletes through intercollegiate competition.
