LOYALIST 69, SENECA 63

LOYALIST 69, SENECA 63

NORTH YORK, Ont. - No one on the Sting team will admit to it, but the team may have been caught looking ahead to their showdown next Wednesday with the George Brown Huskies.

The Sting, hosting the Loyalist Lancers, played uninspired basketball for 40 minutes. The previously unbeaten team made the same mental mistakes which winless teams make. The result was a 69-63 upset win for the Lancers in the Newnham Gym.

Setting the tone for night early, the Sting opened the game by going scoreless for the first six minutes, halting a 6-0 run by the Lancers. The remainder of the opening quarter did not go much better for the home team as they trailed 14-10. No Sting player had more than two points in the opening quarter.

A change in quarter did little to help the Sting offensively as they matched their first quarter 10 points, to put up a season-low 20 points going into the half, trailing 29-20. Steven Bailey scored eight points in the second quarter for the Lancers, include two 3-pointers.

The low scoring continued after halftime as Seneca managed just 13 points in the third quarter as they fell further behind the visiting Lancers. The Sting were led by Felix Adjei's (Toronto) nine points through three quarters.

A more entertaining quarter completed the game as Seneca exploded for 30 points, nearly matching their total from the first three quarters. Eight players made at least one basket in the quarter, but it would not be enough as the Lancers played their best quarter of the game, scoring 20 points for a six-point win.

Adjei led the Sting with 15 points and three assists. Tevin Goodridge (Montreal), Malcolm Smith (Toronto) and Charles Nwokolo (Nigeria) each contributed nine points. Bailey was the leading scorer for the Lancers, scoring a game-high 21 points and adding four rebounds.

The Sting will travel to play George Brown on Wednesday at 8 p.m. while the Lancers travel to St. Lawrence on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
