FANSHAWE 79, MOHAWK 69

LONDON, Ont. - The Fanshawe men's basketball team (6-3) upset the No. 6 CCAA nationally-ranked Mohawk Mountaineers (6-2) on Friday night by a final score of 79-69. The Falcons currently sit tied for third place in the OCAA West Division standings.

Fanshawe started out fast, taking an early 9-0 run after only two minutes. The Falcons were up by as many as 14 but Mohawk started connecting and in a matter of minutes it was back to a one-point game. Fanshawe's Alex Thompson had six assists in the quarter and the Falcons took a 23-20 lead in the second quarter.

The physical play started in the second quarter and both teams refused to give up any easy baskets. With the game tied, Fanshawe's Ryan Pflanzer made back-to-back three pointers, giving the Falcons a six-point lead. Mohawk battled back again to tie the game, but in the final seconds of the half, Fanshawe's Chris Stanhope made a mid-range jumper and the Falcons took a 42-40 lead into the break.

Fanshawe pushed the tempo early in the third quarter and took an eight-point lead, forcing Mohawk to take a timeout. With two minutes left in the quarter, Mohawk made a run, cutting the Falcons lead to just three.

After a pair of made free throws by Fanshawe, Mohawk looked for one final possession in the quarter to cut the lead again. Instead, the Falcons tight defence led to a Mohawk turnover and with two seconds left on the clock, Fanshawe's Elvis Owusu made a fade away jumper to push the lead to seven.

In the fourth, Fanshawe was in early foul trouble and Mohawk slowly chipped away, and were within four with two minutes to go. Thompson took over the offence and dropped two floaters in the lane to put the Falcons up by eight. Mohawk was forced to foul and Fanshawe hit their free throws down the stretch, putting the game out of reach. Fanshawe won by a final score of 79-69.

Fanshawe had a balanced attack with five different players reaching double digits scoring. Chris Stanhope and Chavaun Miller-Bennett both scored 17 for the Falcons. Mohawk's Andrew Cicuttini had 20 points to go along with 22 rebounds.

Fanshawe's next home game takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. versus the Lambton Lions (3-6). The game takes place in the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre.

LONDON, Ont. - It was not a good night for Mohawk's basketball teams Friday (Nov. 29) as the Fanshawe Falcons won a pair of games.

The Mountaineer men saw their record fall to 6-2 dropping a 79-69 decision in London. OCAA men's basketball player of the week Andrew Cicuttini had 20 points and 22 rebounds. Taylor Dowhaniuk scored 13 points and added five boards. Chavaun Miller-Bennett and Chris Stanhope each had 17 points for Fanshawe, which improved to 6-3 and snapped Mohawk's five game win string.

"We played a very poor offensive game and were held to our lowest output of the season," said Mountaineers head coach Brian Jonker. "We need to regroup quickly to play the No. 1 team in the country, Sheridan, on Wednesday night (Dec. 4 at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre)."

Meanwhile, the Fanshawe women dispatched Mohawk 54-46. Katelyn Arbour scored 12 points and Ally DeLorenzi had nine for the Mountaineers, 4-4 and losers of three straight. For the Falcons, who upped their mark to 7-2 after their fifth win in a row, Larissa McBean scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds and Ali Vlasman added 10 points.

"It was a close game all the way through," said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. "We just couldn't get any momentum going on offence and it cost us. Defensively, I thought we played well enough to win. It's a tough loss against a very fierce rival."

Mohawk meets Sheridan at the Braley Centre Wednesday (Dec. 4).
