GEORGIAN 86, SENECA 81

BARRIE, Ont. - The Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's basketball teams wrapped up their first half of the season on Friday night at the Georgian Athletic Centre when they hosted the Seneca Sting.

It was a big night for the men's team although it didn't look like it would be at the start of the night.

Georgian had a tough time getting started and trailed by 11 points at halftime 43-32.

In the third the Grizzlies started showing signs of life and in the last few minutes of the quarter Georgian narrowed the gap to just two points 60-58.

The Grizzlies made the fourth quarter their best of the game, taking the lead and never looking back on way to an 86-81 victory.

Kenrick Lewis (Toronto) led the Grizzlies had a season-high 19 points while shooting 67 per cent from three-point range. Tequilan Zwarych (Whitby, Ont.) had his eighth straight double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

The win gives the Grizzlies an 8-2 record going into the mid-season break which currently puts them in first place however they have played two more games than the 7-1 Durham Lords.

On the women's side, the Grizzlies had another good effort slip away from them as they couldn't find a way to even things up late falling 55-48 to the Sting.

Mackenzie Merkley (Guelph, Ont.) had another strong game for the Grizzlies scoring a team-high 17 points while teammate Kelsey Dunkeld (Barrie, Ont.) had 12 rebounds and scored seven points.

Kelley Nichols (Lennoxville, Que.) led the Sting in scoring with 17 points in the team's third win on the season.

The Grizzlies will have a few weeks off as their next OCAA regular season contest when they host the Loyalist Lancers on Jan. 11 to start the second half of their seasons.
