MOHAWK 88, ST. CLAIR 85

WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair College men's basketball team was nipped by Mohawk College (Hamilton) Saturday afternoon at the SportsPlex losing 88-85 in a game that could have gone either way.

The Saints were down 17-13 after the first quarter of a choppy game. The teams played even in the second quarter as Mohawk took a 39-35 advantage into the halftime break. St. Clair played a strong third quarter staking themselves to a modest 62-58 lead entering the fourth quarter. Mohawk turned the tide quickly and regained a lead that they would not relinquish. St. Clair tied the game at 85-85 with under a minute to play but surrendered a lay-up that proved to be the back-breaker.

Mohawk was deadly from long range making 10 triples and doubled up St. Clair in that category. The Saints scored much of their points in the paint but were also 53-26 victims in bench scoring.

Gil Atencio (Panama City, Panama) led St. Clair with 21 points adding 11 rebounds for the double-double and also swatted away two blocked shots. Third-year guard Will Lara-Caston (Windsor/JL Forster) scored 19 points to go with four assists for the Saints. St. Clair swing man Lance Drummonds (Hamilton) scored 13 points with Nik Veigli (Cottam/Essex District) chipping in with 10 points for the St. Clair.

Mohawk's Rommel Calura (Hamilton) scored a game-high 24 points to lead his team in the win going a perfect 5-of-5 from deep.
