OCAA MEN’S VOLLEYBALL ALL-STARS & MAJOR AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) is pleased to announce the 2005-06 men’s volleyball league all-stars and major award winners. Hosted by Humber College, the OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championships are set to commence today at 2:00pm. The top players in the league were awarded for their hard work and achievements this morning at the championships awards banquet.

Peter Sniuolis of Mohawk College received top honours as he was named OCAA Player of the Year and a CCAA All-Canadian. The third-year Ancaster native has played in all 13 matches for Mohawk this season leading his team to the top of the OCAA Rankings as they finished the year with an undefeated 13-0 league record and received the number one seed at the Championships commencing today. Peter runs the Mohawk offence from the setter position and is one of the premier ball distributors in the league. Earlier in the year he was named a CCAA Athlete of the Month for Ontario and represented his team at the Annual OCAA All Star Game. From the setter position Peter has also accumulated 25 kills, 13 blocks and 21 serving aces, averaging 1.3 PPG. When watching Peter, his game is effortless, but dynamic as he runs the court extremely well and has the opposing team wondering where the ball will go next.

Brett Dailey (Ottawa, ON) of the Seneca Sting also collected a CCAA All-Canadian title. Brett won the OCAA and Central East scoring title this year averaging an impressive 5.2 PPG. Brett spiked his way into the OCAA history books this year by overtaking the Most Kills in a Match record with 30 and Most Points in a Match record with 39. Seneca finished the year 7-6 and are looking to improve on last year’s silver medal performance this weekend at the OCAA Championships.

Justin Guerin of the Fanshawe Falcons claimed the OCAA Rookie of the Year honours for leading his team and winning the West region scoring title averaging 4.2 PPG. The Chatham native enjoyed a tremendous first year with the Falcons leading them to a 12-1 record claiming the West region title and earning a bye to the Championships.

Gord Williamson of the Durham Lords and James Bradley of the Mohawk Moutaineers both earned OCAA Coach of the Year honours for their respective regions. Gord led his Lords to an undefeated 13-0 record this season capturing the Central East region title and a bye to the provincial championships. Meanwhile, James guided his Moutaineer squad to an undefeated 13-0 league record and overall record including tournaments of 20-8-2. This year Mohawk won the Central West region title, have held the number one spot in OCAA weekly rankings since November 14th, are currently ranked fourth in the country and have earned the number one seed at the Provincial Championships taking place this weekend. James has also received the nod for CCAA Coach of the Year Nominee.

All matches at the 2006 Men’s Volleyball Championships are taking place at Humber College, Etobicoke. For complete tournament information including game times and results visit the Championship Host Site.
