MOHAWK #1 RANKING RINGS TRUE WITH OCAA GOLD

OCAA Championships
Final Standings:

1. Mohawk
2. Durham
3. Algonquin

The Mohawk Mountaineers came into the OCAA Provincial Championship Tournament as the favourite, based on their # 1 seeding and 13-0 league record. They did not disappoint as they rolled to their first men’s volleyball title since the 1981-82 season.

The Mountaineers picked up their opening match over the Seneca Sting 3-1 (North York) with set scores of 20-25, 25-21, 11-25 and 21-25. Kevin Watson led his Mountaineers squad with a 17-point offensive performance (16 kills, 1 ace). In the semi-final match the Mountaineers picked up a close 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 25-16, 7-15) victory over the Algonquin Thunder (Ottawa) led by Brent Carter’s 22-points (17 kills, 2 block, 3 aces).

In the finals the Hamilton based club faced the # 3 seeded Durham College “Lords” from Oshawa. Mohawk jumped out in front and took the first set, but they were taken by surprise in the second as Durham dominated in a 25-16 win. The skill and determination of the Mountaineers took over and they took the next two sets to close out the tournament as the top team on the podium. Set scores were 21-25, 25-16, 22-25 and 18-25.

All Star Adam Schiedel led the way offensively for the Lords as he made 14 kills and 3 service aces for 16 offensive points. Josh Bowen joined in on the accolades as he was selected as the Durham “Player of the Game”.

The Most Valuable Player of the Men’s side was Mohawk’s Brett Carter. All you have to do is look at his stats for the final game as he posted 15 kills, 2 stuff blocks and 2 service aces for 19 points. Steve Pawelczky stood out and was selected as the Mountaineer “Player of the Game”.

Mohawk will now represent Ontario at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association National Championship Tournament that will take place in Quebec in two weeks.
