GEORGIAN 3, LA CITE 1

OTTAWA - The Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's volleyball teams mad their annual trip east to Ottawa for OCAA regular season matches against Algonquin and La Cité this past weekend.

The women's team opened their road trip on Saturday against the Thunder from Algonquin. The Grizzlies were able to put together a great start after winning a tight first set 27-25 and carried the momentum right into a 25-13 second set for a commanding 2-0 lead.

The Thunder wouldn't give in taking the next two sets 25-14 and 25-21 to even the score. The two teams battled in the third set but it was Algonquin who were able to squeeze out a 3-2 victory after a 15-9 tiebreak set win.

Fifth year middle, Hannah Campbell (Midland) had a fantastic game scoring 17 points.

The Grizzlies women followed that up with a meeting with the Coyotes from La Cité on Sunday. Georgian bounced back with an impressive 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16) sweep over the home team. Last year's Female Athlete of the Year Natalie Buck (Keswick) had a particularly strong game scoring 16 points to help move the Grizzlies record to 2-1 on the season.

Then men's team suffered a similar fate falling behind a strong Algonquin team and were unable to pull out of it losing 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-18). Refusing to leave the road trip empty handed, the Grizzlies redeemed themselves on Sunday versus the Coyotes.

The second year duo of Jason Grimm (Orangeville) and Lyndon Sonego (Barrie) combined for 40 of the teams total 65 points on route to a 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-17) victory over La Cité. The Grizzlies earned their first win of the year and are now 1-2 on the season.

The Grizzlies will host the Fleming Knights this Saturday at the Georgian Athletic Centre in Barrie with the women's game taking place at 1 p.m. and the men's at 3 p.m.
