DURHAM 3, SENECA 1

DURHAM 3, SENECA 1

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College men's volleyball team defeated Seneca 3-1 Thursday night at the CRWC. Set scores were 25-17, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-12.

This is the Lords fourth consecutive victory as they move into a tie for first place in the OCAA East region with the Loyalist Lancers. Both teams have matching 5-1 records.

Lords setter Riley McAllister (Whitby, Ont.) benefitted from a strong performance from several of the Durham big men. McAllister finished the four set match with 30 total assists which in turn led to four Durham players collecting six or more kills. McAllister also worked hard on the defensive end finishing with eight digs and two blocked shots alongside libero Dan Popovic (Pickering, Ont.) who led the team with nine digs.

This strong effort from Popovic and McAllister led to the strong net play of the Lords as nearly every option produced positive results. The first set was finished by big hitter Alex Van Staalduinen (Peterborough, Ont.) who led the team with 10 kills.

After faltering in the second set the Lords responded quickly. The third and fourth set saw a trend of big blocks and booming kills led by Jeremy Hoekstra (Cobourg, Ont.) who tallied three blocked shots and nine kills.

Petrus Kuypers (Haydon, Ont.) saw major success in the third set working hard in the middle while also collecting an ace. Kuypers was flanked by Brad VanHartingsveldt (Newcastle, Ont.) who sealed the Stings' third set fate with incredible back-to-back blocks late in the set.

After more intimidating kills from Hoekstra and Van Staalduinen in the fourth set, Kuypers and VanHartingsveldt would then work together on the final point of the game as they both rose well above the net to produce the game winning block.

The Lords will look to continue their winning streak on Saturday, Nov. 23 when they visit Canadore in North Bay.
