WINDSOR, Ont. - The Royals volleyball teams picked up where they left off in 2013 with a pair of victories today against the St. Clair Saints in Windsor. With the pair of victories, both women's and men's teams run their record to 7-3 and have each won three straight.

After a stretch of exhibition games over the Christmas break against some very strong competition, the Lady Royals proved to be in good form to start the year against the Saints in a 3-0 win.

Despite falling behind in both the first and second sets, Redeemer clawed back using their strong serving and rotating through a line-up that saw 11 players play in the match.

Game scores in the match were 26-24, 25-19, and 25-18.

For the Royals, Tara Van Halteren (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Ali Blekkenhorst (Murillo, Ont.) have continued their strong play after filling in for third-year libero Rebekah Wright (Burlington, Ont.) who has been out with a concussion for six weeks.

Redeemer head coach Doug Veldman commented regarding the match saying, "St. Clair was in the final of the Adidas Cup over the Christmas break which was a 12 tournament team so we were happy to grind out the win. We came from behind early in both the first sets and were happy that we could used 11 players throughout the match."

The Royals turn their attention to a key match up this Wednesday when Redeemer travels to Humber College (9-0).

"The team is looking forward to this week's match up," mentioned Veldman. "If we can control our passing game, Humber will be in for a battle."

For the Redeemer Royals men's team, a 3.5 hour trip up to Windsor on Saturday was likely not their first choice of venue for a group that was stuck in Seattle since Sunday due to flight cancellations.

However, the Royals mustered whatever energy they had and powered their way to a 3-1 win against a tough St. Clair Saints squad. A team that had won five of six to start the season, has had a tough stretch of games including two losses against the Royals as their record now falls to 5-5.

The Redeemer Royals now sit at 7-3, tied for second in the OCAA West, and poised for a huge match against the Humber Hawks on Wednesday.
