GEORGIAN 3, TRENT 1

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Georgian Grizzlies volleyball teams traveled to Peterborough, Ont., this past weekend for matches against the Fleming Knights and the Trent Excalibur.

The Grizzlies women's team had a great weekend starting with a 3-0 sweep over the Knights on Saturday. Georgian's impressive performance was highlighted with dominating set wins of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-9.

Hannah Campbell (Midland, Ont.) led the team with 11 points including five serving aces while Kathryn Marks (Innisfil, Ont.) had a good game with eight points.

The Grizzlies rode that momentum into Sunday as they faced the Excalibur, a team that has had Georgian's number in recent history.

The Grizzlies got out to a 2-0 lead putting the Excalibur in a big hole. After the Excalibur rallied back to tie it up 2-2, the Grizzlies were able to pull out a tight win in the final set to take the match 3-2 (25-21, 25-20, 12-25, 11-25, 17-15).

Allison Marshall (Orillia, Ont.) led the team in scoring with 14 points while Campbell and Brittany Coughlin (North Bay, Ont.) had eight points each in the win.

On the men's side the Grizzlies had a tough time against the Fleming Knights falling in straight sets 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) to begin their weekend. Matt Boucher (Collingwood, Ont.) led the team with eight points in the contest.

Georgian regrouped on the Sunday putting forth a great effort against Trent and the Grizzlies came away with a 3-1 victory (26-24, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23).

Darien Haynes (Barrie, Ont.) had a season-high 19 points while Jason Grimm (Orangeville, Ont.) had a solid 16-point effort. Sophomore Justin Burke (Wingham, Ont.) also had 38 assists in the win.

The Grizzlies will be back in action this weekend as they host the Algonquin Thunder and La Cité Coyotes on Saturday and Sunday at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
