BARRIE, Ont. - The Georgian Grizzlies men's and women's volleyball teams put together impressive wins in a pair of important games against the visiting Trent Excalibur on Saturday afternoon at the Georgian Athletic Centre.

On the women's side the Grizzlies earned every point they scored in a tight match up against the Excalibur. Georgian were able to come away with a 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-23, 28-30, 25-21).

The Grizzlies women, who were ranked 10th in the most recent CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) rankings, kept their win streak alive which now extends to 11 straight victories as they sit in first place in the east division standings with a 12-1 record.

Allison Marshall (Orillia, Ont.) led the Grizzlies in scoring with 16 points while teammate Brittany Coughlin (North Bay, Ont.) had a particularly strong game with 13 points.

Fifth-year middle Hannah Campbell (Midland, Ont.) had a 15-point effort including four blocks. The four blocks helped her surpass the previous mark for all-time career leader in blocks of 217 which was set by Durham's Mandi Doris between 2005-10.

While Campbell now sits with 218 blocks which beat that record, current Fanshawe Falcons middle Stephanie Bignell surpassed the mark herself on Saturday so for the time being she will hold the record with 224 blocks. The two will have an exciting finish for the all-time mark as the season winds down, with Campbell getting a chance to catch Bignell for the mark on Sunday.

A shorthanded Grizzlies men's team battled the third-place Excalibur while missing some key individuals due to injury.

The match was an emotional rollercoaster as both teams went on big runs and staged huge comebacks in nearly every set of the match. Georgian was able to stand strong in the end winning all three sets that needed extra points to decide a winner leading to a big 3-1 victory (29-27, 27-25, 14-25, 26-24).

Barrie, Ont., native Darien Haynes led the way for the Grizzlies with a 19-point effort including 16 kills while teammate Matt Boucher (Collingwood, Ont.) put together a strong 13 points.

The win helps the Grizzlies move back into the playoff picture as they now sit in sixth place in the east division standings.

Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at the Georgian Athletic Centre when they host the Fleming Knights.
