MOHAWK 3, SHERIDAN 1

OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Mohawk men's volleyball team picked up its fifth straight win to start the OCAA season Wednesday at Sheridan College.

The Mountaineers took a four-set decision from the hometown Bruins, winning 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16. Sheridan dropped to 2-3.

Bryce Marcussen led the way for Mohawk with 13 kills, one service ace and one stuff block. Trevor McLaughlin came up with 11 kills, two aces and two blocks. Chris Spack set a very efficient offence.

Coach Matt Schnarr said his players' commitment to each other was incredible. "Every night we keep growing and getting better, but we still need to be more diligent in our execution."

This is a big week for the Mohawk men. Sheridan will be followed by another physical team that will test the Mountaineers mettle, as they host Humber Saturday (Nov. 14) at 6 p.m. at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre.

In women's play, Sheridan beat Mohawk 3-1. Set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-25.  Coach Schnarr, subbed for women's coach Andrew Nicholson for this match and said Brittany Gingrich had a great night on offence as did Yvonne Mann in the setter's role. The team also had a great defensive effort, but just failed to capitalize on its chances. Still, he was impressed by the effort and commitment.

Both the Mountaineers and Bruins are now 2-3.

Mohawk plays host to Humber Saturday (Nov. 14) at 4 p.m. at the DBARC.
