GOMES NAMED OCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Humber College's Jake Gomes (Oakville, Ont.) was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Volleyball Player of the Year in a ceremony held in Peterborough, Ont., on Wednesday evening as part of the 2020 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.

The third-year setter quarterbacked a Humber squad that lost only two sets during the regular season. Gomes averaged 8.10 assists per set, good for eighth among all OCAA players. He also contributed 66 points and 59 digs over 14 matches. Also named a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian, the West Division Player of the Year headlines the West Division First-Team All-Stars.

Liam Gray (Barrie, Ont.) of the East Division champion Durham Lords is the East Division Player of the Year. The fifth-year setter is now a three-time All-Canadian having won the award with Georgian in 2017 and 2018. Gray was among the league leaders in service aces averaging 0.84 per set. His 246 all-time aces is an OCAA record. Gray headlines the East Division First-Team All-Stars.

Humber's Joshua Fadare (Markham, Ont.) is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The middle blocker was 11th among all OCAA players averaging 3.9 points and 3.03 kills per set. The West Division Rookie of the Year also headlines the West Division All-Rookie Team.

Wayne Wilkins of Humber is the OCAA nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. The Hawks completed one of the best regular seasons on record, winning 54 sets while losing only two. Humber easily won the West Division crown with its 18-0 mark.

The East Division Scoring Champion is Richard Bucar (Ottawa, Ont.) of Algonquin. The third-year power averaged 4.8 points per set on 193 kills, 52 service aces and 26 blocks. The West Division Scoring Champion is Frankie Friesen (Staples, Ont.) of St. Clair. The second-year outside hitter averaged 5.2 points per set on 242 kills, 30 service aces and 21 blocks. Both were named First-Team All-Stars in their respective divisions.

Georgian's Kaelan Kloetstra (London, Ont.) is the East Division Rookie of the Year. The outside hitter was among the OCAA's Top 5 in scoring averaging 4.4 points per set on 187 kills, 44 service aces and 16 blocks. Kloetstra headlines the East Division All-Rookie Team.

In addition to Gomes and Friesen, OCAA West Division First-Team All-Stars include Conestoga's Eric Katerberg (Listowel, Ont.); Humber's Andrew Blakey (Collingwood, Ont.); Niagara's Samuel Otten (Toronto, Ont.); Redeemer's Brayden Stoffers (Frankford, Ont.); and Sheridan's Liam Butchereit (Mississauga, Ont.).

Joining Gray and Bucar as OCAA East Division First-Team All-Stars are Algonquin's Tom Cullingworth (Ottawa, Ont.); Canadore's Ryan Carnevale (Toronto, Ont.) and Jean Francois Daoust (Sturgeon Falls, Ont.); Durham's Andrew Dube (Uxbridge, Ont.); and Fleming's Joel Howes (Sharbot Lake, Ont.).

The OCAA West Division Second-Team All-Stars include Conestoga's Ryan Clutton (Waterloo, Ont.) and Judah Verbeek (Elmira, Ont.); Fanshawe's Mike Liscumb (Ilderton, Ont.); Humber's Rady Kim (Toronto, Ont.) and Rrezart Sadiku (Kosovo); Mohawk's Alex Turkiewicz (Hamilton, Ont.); and Niagara's Elijah Bugiardini (Hamilton, Ont.).

Named OCAA East Division Second-Team All-Stars were Canadore's Jackson Brear (North Bay, Ont.); Centennial's Timothy Ho (Toronto, Ont.); George Brown's Vivek Mathimakki (Scarborough, Ont.); Georgian's Mike Fors (Uxbridge, Ont.); Loyalist's Savino Marques (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Josh Roberts (Conception Bay, N.L.); and Seneca's David Blom (Aurora, Ont.).

Joining Fadare on the West Division All-Rookie Team are Conestoga's Verbeek; Fanshawe's Ewan Mason (London, Ont.); Niagara's Colin Prelaz (London, Ont.); and St. Clair's Logan Ondricko (Belle River, Ont.) and Simran Pahal (Kitchener, Ont.).

Joining Kloetstra on the East Division All-Rookie Team are Canadore's Ben Thompson (North Bay, Ont.); Durham's Rouzbeh Rahnavard (Richmond Hill, Ont.); Loyalist's Andrew Hudgins (Napanee, Ont.) and Riley Litwiller (Cambridge, Ont.); and Seneca's Ehsan Ghazanfari (Iran).
