GEORGE BROWN 60, SHERIDAN 57 (FINAL)

TORONTO – A balanced attack by the George Brown Huskies helped them overcome a late run by the Sheridan Bruins at the 2012 adidas/VSP sports OCAA Women's Basketball Championship at Seneca College's Newnham Gymnasium this morning.  The Huskies advanced to the tournament's bronze medal game after a 60-57 victory versus the Bruins.  George Brown will face the winner of the next game, featuring the Fanshawe Falcons and Algoma Thunderbirds at 11 a.m., in the bronze medal match which is set for a 4 p.m. tipoff.  The match-up for tonight's gold medal game has already been set, pitting the host Seneca Sting versus the Algonquin Thunder, with the game schedule for 6 p.m. tonight.

George Brown started this game aggressively, driving to the basket with authority and earning ten trips to the free-throw line in the first half, heading to the break with a 34-19 lead.  The Bruins were unable to match the Huskies' intensity ending the first half without a single free-throw attempt.  The Huskies received strong offensive and defensive efforts from a number of players in this game.  Rookie Aindrea Barrett, of Toronto, collected the double-double for George Brown, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while team-mate Kristina Lane, a fellow Toronto native, contributed 10 points and seven boards on four-for-eight shooting.  Lane was named the adidas/VSP sports Player of the Game for the Huskies. Markham's Janice Lui epitomized George Brown's aggressive approach with a game-high nine trips to the free-throw line, finishing with eight points and five assists.

The Bruins mounted a comeback in the second-half shooting better than 45% from the field and bringing the game to within three, late in the final frame.  Led by OCAA Scoring Champion and All-Star Nakia Arthur, of Brampton, Ont., who collected a game-high 20 points in the loss, Sheridan found its offensive groove in the final two quarters.  However, guard Michelle Abella, of Hamilton, Ont., was the only other Sheridan scorer to reach double-digits in the game, finishing with 12 points and three steals on five-for-nine shooting.  Arthur earned the Player of the Game nomination for the Bruins.  With the loss, Sheridan was eliminated from medal contention at the OCAA Championship.
