The Georgian Grizzlies women's basketball team opened up their 2012-2013 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) season with a 51-40 loss at the hands of the visiting Loyalist Lancers Friday night at the Georgian College Athletic Centre.

The Grizzlies struggled to score early shooting just 19.2 percent in the first half and finding themselves down 29-17 at the half. In the second half, Georgian started to find their scoring touch but it was too little too late and they couldn't overcome the first half deficit.

Despite the loss the Grizzlies had a great effort from fourth year veteran Kara Faulkner who put up an impressive 13 points to lead the team including being 3-for-7 from the three point line.  Mackenzie Merkley added seven points while Kasey Faulkner added six and rookie Agnes Bartosik had 12 rebounds looking strong around the basket.

Martine Gauvin and Samantha Goff both had 13 point efforts for the Lancers in their first win of the season.

The Grizzlies will have a quick turnaround as they will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they face the visitors from St. Lawrence College–Kingston at 1 p.m. at the Georgian College Athletic Centre in Barrie.
