FANSHAWE 62, MOHAWK 39

Fanshawe came to Hamilton and took both ends of their OCAA basketball twin bill against Mohawk at the Fennell Gym Friday (Nov, 16). The Falcons handed the top ranked team in the country, the Mountaineer men, their first loss of the season, 95-85. Chavaun Miller-Bennett led the London squad with 20 points, while Kyle McConnell added 17. For Mohawk, Andrew Cicuttini scored 31 points plus five rebounds, Manny Campbell had 17 points and Jeff Hunt, according to head coach Brian Jonker, had his best game of the year with 12 points and five boards.

The Mountaineers were down by 20 points midway through the third quarter, before rallying to get back to within three points a couple of times, but no closer. And the coach said his team didn't deserve to win. "They out worked us and wanted it more than us," said Jonker. "We can't take a night off. Everyone is gunning for us. The same will happen tomorrow (against Lambton) if we don't come out and play hard right from the opening tip."

Mohawk saw it's record slip to 4-1 while Fanshawe moved ahead of them and into first place in the West Region, at 5-0.

Meanwhile, the Fanshawe women improved to 4-1 defeating Mohawk 62-39. The Mountaineers fell to 2-3. Natasha Amo had 13 points for the Falcons, while Felicia Mazerolle had 12 points and Tanisha Bromfield contributed 11. Lacey Wolters had eight points and 12 rebounds for Mohawk while Katelyn Arbour and Carissa Browne had six points each.

"We just couldn't handle their pressure in the first half and it cost us," said Mountaineers head coach Kevin Duffy. "They had 30 points off our turnovers and that was difference in the game. We have a lot of rookies out there going through a lot of growing pains, but we will continue to work hard, correct our errors and get better as the season progresses. These tough games will make us better in the long run."

Saturday's action with Sarnia's Lambton Lions at the Fennell Gymnasium, gets going at 6 p.m. with the women's game, followed at 8 p.m. by the men.

The Lambton men are 1-3.. the women are 2-2.
