MOHAWK 81, ST. CLAIR 78 (OT)

It was worth the wait for Mohawk's basketball teams. Their games against St. Clair were snowed out last week and rescheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 13) and both teams beat the Saints in Windsor.

The women provided the real excitement on this night, as they needed overtime to beat the home side 81-78. The teams were tied 68-all after 40 minutes and the Mountaineers outscored the Saints 13-10 in overtime. Carissa Browne scored 22 points for Mohawk. Rachelle Abella and Natalie Fisher picked up 13 each. For St. Clair, Kelly Rizea scored 17 points and Bienka Jones added 16. So Mohawk improved to 8-7, in fifth p[lace in the West Region, two points behind fourth place St. Clair, which is 9-7.

Mohawk plays twice this weekend. The Mountaineers host Sault College Saturday (Feb. 16) at 6 p.m. and Algoma on Sunday at 1 p.m. Then on Wednesday (Feb. 20) they finish up the regular season at home to Sheridan.

The Mountaineer men, the reigning OCAA and CCAA champions, drubbed St. Clair 84-43 to improve to 14-3, while the Saints fell to 5-13. Alex Reis had 22 points and Manny Campbell 14 for Mohawk, while Matei Nuna scored 10 for St. Clair.

The Mountaineers have three home games left. They go against Sault College Saturday at 8 p.m. and Algoma on Sunday at 3 p.m. They then finish the regular campaign against visiting Sheridan Wednesday (Feb. 20). The Sheridan Bruins are currently in first place with a 15-2 record and two points ahead of Mohawk.
