MOHAWK 74, SHERIDAN 63

HAMILTON, Ont. - It would be a two-step process if the Sheridan Bruins women's basketball team (10-16, 7-11 OCAA) were to qualify, needing to win on the road and hope for a Niagara loss.

Ultimately neither side worked out in their favour, as their season will end with a 74-63 loss to Mohawk.

"It's a disappointing end to a very challenging season, but I'm very proud of our girls and how hard everybody fought," Sheridan head coach Willie Delas said. "We fought right to the very end and never gave up."

With their season hanging on by a thread, the Lady Bruins jumped out to an early lead on the strength of an 11-0 run to start the game.

Mohawk quickly answered with a 7-0 run of their own, but the Double-Blue would hold at 20-7 advantage after one.

In the second quarter, it was Mohawk's turn to go on a run (14-2) that pulled them within one, 24-23.

Sheridan was able to maintain a slim advantage - 30-26 - at the half.

Ultimately the Lady Bruins were not able to maintain the same intensity that they started with and Mohawk slowly began to take command, out-scoring Sheridan 27-19 and 21-14 in the final two periods.

Haeven Durrant scored a 37 points while hauling down 24 rebounds - both career highs, capping a run where she's scored at least 22 in five straight, while also reeling off a ninth straight double-double.

Shylanda Saunders was also in double-figures with 11 points.

While the season may be ending much sooner than he would have hoped for, Delas knows they have a good core to build around the work preparing for 2013-14 begins right away.

"We're not going to take any sort of break at all, we're going to get right on the recruiting trail and build a bigger, stronger team for next year," he said.
