HUMBER 52, FANSHAWE 49

LONDON, Ont. - On Wednesday night, the Fanshawe Falcons women's basketball team (8-4) lost a heartbreaker to the No. 14 CCAA nationally-ranked Humber Hawks (11-2) by a final score of 52-49.

The Falcons started the game taking the ball strong to the basket and had the Hawks in the penalty with only three minutes gone by. Back-to-back three pointers by Humber's Mary Asare gave the Hawks their first lead of the game. Humber ended the quarter on a 16-2 run and led by 10 heading to the second.

After being down by as many as 13, Fanshawe hit four straight baskets, and cut the Hawks lead to just five. Again, Humber stormed back and led 30-19 heading into half time.

The Falcons started the second half on a 6-0 run. Fanshawe won the third quarter by two points and found itself down by only nine with one quarter to play. The Falcons picked up their defence in the fourth and frustrated the Hawks, holding them to only two points after the first nine minutes of the quarter. Fanshawe kept on fighting and came all the way back to tie the game at 46 on a drive by Ali Vlasman with less the two minutes to play.

A huge three pointer by Humber's Asare with 50 seconds left in the game gave the Hawks the lead again. Fanshawe would hold the Hawks to just eight points in the final quarter but Humber would hold on to win by a final score of 52-49.

Fanshawe's next game takes place during Falcons Fest on Saturday, Jan. 25 at home versus the Niagara Knights (8-4). Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
