DURHAM 61, SENECA 49

TORONTO - In a match-up of two evenly ranked teams in the standings, one team stood above the other Friday night as the Durham Lords defeated the host Seneca Sting 61-49.

With both teams sporting one win each coming in, it was the Durham Lords who looked like the stronger team from the opening tip, leading wire-to-wire following an opening field goal early in the first quarter.

It was the Lords defence which allowed them to prevail on this evening, creating havoc for the Sting ball handlers. On numerous occasions, the Sting were called for violations either trying to cross half court or failing to beat the 24 second shot clock.

The Lords led by scores of 18-16, 31-24 and 47-32 at the end of each quarter before the Sting clawed back to within 12 before the final buzzer sounded.

Sarah Givens (Kingston) led the Sting with 13 points. Kelley Nichols (Lennoxville, Que.) also reached double-figures with 10 points. Estefania Saakan Prieto (Toronto) led the Sting on the glass with seven rebounds.

Lindsay Panchan was the top scorer for Durham with 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor along with six rebounds, seven assists and six rebounds. Kayla Marshall helped out with 14 points and five rebounds while Hellen Dumbuya added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Sting host the Fleming Knights on Tuesday at 6 p.m. while the Lords are off for a week before welcoming the Georgian Grizzlies at 6 p.m.
