ANGOU NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

ANGOU NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Chuot Angou of the Fanshawe Falcons is the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Basketball Player of the Year.

"Chuot's ability to shoot and get to the basket make her a great player and she made sure her team would get another Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) crown with an outstanding 30-point performance in the provincial final," said Mai-Anh Nguyen, CCAA Women's Basketball Convenor.

Angou led the Falcons to a 17-1 record and tie atop the OCAA West Division standings. Fanshawe defended its provincial title by defeating the host St. Clair Saints 93-80 in the OCAA Championship final.

The fifth-year guard set a new OCAA regular season record for free-throw percentage, shooting 60-of-67 for 89.6 per cent. She also shot an OCAA best 36.8 per cent from the three-point line. Angou averaged 18.4 points per game and led the conference with 28.5 points per 40 minutes.

Angou is willing to sacrifice her own personal success for that of the team, which reflects immensely on her character and team-first mentality.

She is extremely skilled offensively and has an incredible ability to score. Angou can create for herself, get to the rim and has beautiful shooting form. She also reads her opponent's strategies, makes adjustments and leads her teammates accordingly.

Angou is also a tenacious on-ball defender who communicates well with her teammates.

Her talent on the court is undeniable but what is perhaps most impressive is Angou's passion for competing. She is an elite student-athlete who knows what it takes to win and has the competitiveness to achieve that objective.

Angou volunteers with the London CYO Basketball Club youth camps and U16 girls competitive team. She is also a guest coach at John Paul II Catholic Secondary School.

"Chuot works hard to develop both her skills and leadership qualities and in the process, has made everybody around her a better player," said Bill Carriere, Head Coach of the Falcons. "Chuot has bought in to the team-first mentality that we preach and is always the first one supporting her teammates' success."

Other nominees for the CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year award were Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu of the Camosun Chargers (Pacific Western Athletic Association), Brittney Thibeaux of the Olds Broncos (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference), Taisha Exanor of the Dawson Blues (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec) and Vanessa Soffee of the St. Thomas Tommies (Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association).

CCAA Player of the Year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship banquet.
