GRANT HEADLINES OCAA WOMEN'S RUGBY SEVENS AWARDS

TORONTO - Humber College's Daniella Grant (Newmarket, Ont.) is the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Rugby Sevens Player of the Year.

The fourth-year back scored seven tries and booted one convert in five matches this season, leading Humber to a 4-1 record and a second seed in the upcoming OCAA Women's Rugby Sevens Championship. She scored multiple tries in three of her matches. Grant is also an OCAA All-Star.

St. Lawrence's Ella Van Hal (Kingston, Ont.) is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The scrum half scored two tries in a match two times for a total of four tries in four matches. Van Hal is also an OCAA All-Star.

Samantha Gates (Uxbridge, Ont.) of Durham is the OCAA League Scoring Champion. The first-year back scored five tries and kicked 10 converts to total 45 points in five matches, helping lead Durham to a perfect record and a regular season title. Gates is also an OCAA All-Star.

St. Lawrence's Kate Pasic is the OCAA Coach of the Year. Pasic led St. Lawrence to a 3-2 record in an abbreviated regular season, improving their win percentage from .417 in 2019 to .600 in 2021. St. Lawrence has the third seed in the upcoming provincials.

In addition to Grant, Van Hal and Gates, OCA All-Stars include Heather Bews (Whitby, Ont.) and Danika Johnson (Courtice, Ont.) of Durham; Robyn Ellis (Bridgenorth, Ont.) and Hannah Rose Gilpin (Nestleton Station, Ont.) of Fleming; Sarah Bothen (Grimsby, Ont.) and Essence Palmer-McCarthy (Mississauga, Ont.) of Humber; Jasmina Dennis (Napanee, Ont.) of Loyalist; Victoria Wentz (Kingston, Ont.) of St. Lawrence; and Madison Ayres (Ajax, Ont.) of Seneca.
