WINDSOR, Ont. - The St. Clair College women's soccer team hosted a playoff match on Saturday afternoon at the Main Campus Field and came away with a hard fought 3-1 win over the Niagara Knights.
The Saints got on the board first on a goal by Kaitlyn Austin in the 28th minute. The rest of the first half was played fairly evenly.
Niagara scored quickly at the beginning of the second half in the 49th minute to even the score. St. Clair dominated play for the rest of the second half but failed to capitalize on their chances.
The Saints finally took the lead in the 89th minute on a header by Tiffany Trembley. St. Clair scored their third goal just before play was called in extra time on a goal by Marisa Stratis with the Knights goalkeeper up in the play trying to get the equalizer.
St. Clair had 15 shots on goal compared to seven for Niagara. Katrina Arnold was solid in goal in picking up the win.
With the win the Saints have qualified for the OCAA championship being hosted by Fleming College in Peterborough, Ont., from Oct 29-31. St. Clair will take on the host Fleming Knights on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a quarter-final match.
St. Clair is currently ranked second in Ontario and in seventh in Canada. The Saints ended up tied for first place in the OCAA West Region with a record of 9-1. Fleming ended their regular season with a record of 2-9-1 and tied for fifth place in the East Division.
