MALASPINA PROVES TO BE HUMBER’S ACHILLES HEEL

The OCAA would like to congratulate the Humber Hawks (Etobicoke) on their fourth place finish at the CCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships. The sixth seeded Hawks advanced to the bronze medal game but were defeated by the third seeded Malaspina Mariners of Nanaimo, BC 3-0. Set scores were 25-19, 25-16, 25-15. The squad from Nanaimo had Humber’s number throughout the tournament as the Mariners defeated the Hawks in the first round by the score of 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15).

Overall, the Hawks went 2-2 at the Championships. After the first round defeat to the Mariners, the Hawks regrouped to defeat St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies of Fredericton, NB 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-14). Perfection Powell was a force in the second match as she hammered down 11 kills in the win. To advance to the bronze medal match, the Hawks blew past the fourth seeded Mount Royal College (MRC) Cougars of Calgary, AB 3-0. Set scores were 25-23, 25-15, 25-22. Amanada Arlette led the Hawks with 11 kills in the match.

Risha Toney of the Hawks had an outstanding tournament for the Hawks as she was recognized as a first team all-star.
