TRENT 3, DURHAM 2

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – In an early season match-up between two of the top ranked teams in Ontario, the Durham College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Trent Excalibur in Peterborough on Wednesday night.

Set scores in the marathon match were 25-15, 16-25, 26-24, 16-25 and 15-13.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Lords went on a four-point run led by the serving of Kerri Fotherby (Newcastle, Ont.) to take a 5-3 lead. Trent would claw back to tie the game, as the teams would trade points back and forth to end up tied at 13 points apiece. The last two points in the match ended with long rallies in favour of the Excalibur, as they won their third straight match.

Setter Meghan Renwick (Brooklin, Ont.), did a great job of distributing the ball throughout the Lords line-up as three players finished with 13 points. Leah Saar (Pickering, Ont.) had 10 kills and three aces while Allison Doris (Ajax, Ont.) registered eight kills and five aces. Melissa Semeniuk (Ajax, Ont.) rounded out the list of top scorers with nine kills and four aces.

Trent's Rebecca van Staalduinen had 11 kills and seven digs in the win while Sarah Norton had eight kills, one ace and one block. Emma Schlegi had a great defensive effort for Trent with 13 digs.

Trent leads the OCAA east region with a 3-0 record to start the season. Durham falls to 1-1 after their first loss in a best-of-five match this season.

The Lords will head back to Peterborough on Friday night as they will match-up against the winless Fleming Knights (0-3). Game time is at 6 p.m. Fleming is coached by Durham College sports hall of famer Carol Hart.
