MOHAWK 3, CANADORE 0

The second semester of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) volleyball play started with a bang for the Mohawk Mountaineers. The men's and women's teams both fashioned three game sweeps of the visiting Canadore Panthers from North bay.

The men needed less than an hour to dispose of Canadore by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-11.
Eric Danecke had nine kills, two service aces and one stuff block for Mohawk, which ended a three match skid and improved to 6-4. Brad Regier had eight kills, three aces and one block. For Canadore, now 1-9, Dan Trudel had four kills and one ace.

The Mountaineers meet the Nipissing Lakers, also of North Bay, Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Fennell Gym. The Lakers will be formidable opponents. They saw their five match win string snapped Friday, when they bowed 3-2 to Redeemer, but Nipissing still sports an 8-2 record.

The Mohawk women handed Canadore their 10th consecutive defeat with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-11 decision. The Mountaineers upped their mark to 6-4.

Melissa DeHaan had 10 kills, one ace and three blocks for Mohawk. Charlotte Huitema collected four kills and six aces and Julie Gagnon had eight kills and five digs. Samantha Everett had three kills and one block to pace the struggling Panthers.

Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Fennell Gym, the Mohawk women host Nipissing. The Lakers improved to 8-2, with a 3-1 victory over Redeemer Friday night.
