SENECA 3, BOREAL 0

Having dropped three of their previous four matches and six of eight, the Seneca Sting knew they needed to secure a win over the winless Boreal Vipers on Saturday night. The Sting controlled the match from start the finish save for a minor hiccup midway through the first set to get back to the five hundred mark on the season.

The win also gives Seneca a two game lead for the sixth and final playoff spots in the OCAA East Division.

Seneca took the lead early in the first set before a combination of Boreal's offence and Seneca errors tied the set up at 15. The Vipers would take a 16-15 lead for their only lead of the match.  Seneca's Bianca Newman served tough throughout the opening set as Seneca took a 23-17 lead.  A kill by Charito Humphreys ended the opening set as Seneca won 25-19.

In the second set, the Sting led wire-to-wire. The Sting offence began to gain momentum with Delia LeBlanc controlling the offence from the setter's position after she replaced Humphreys in the opening set. Seneca rolled a 25-17 set victory to take a commanding two sets to none lead.

Having overcome everything the Vipers could throw at them, Seneca took control of the match.  The offence was in sync from the opening serve as the Sting held an early 9-2 advantage. A net violation on the Sting halted the momentum momentarily before getting the serve back. An ace by Humphreys, who was now hitting from the left side gave Seneca a 17-4 lead which led to a Boreal timeout in a last ditch effort to gain momentum. It was not to be as Seneca dominated the third set 25-8 to close out the match in exactly one hour.

The Sting's balanced offence was led by Humphreys who had twelve points (seven kills, five aces). Kim Cedros had eight kills along with Newman who had six kills and two aces. LeBlanc had two blocks for the Sting while OCAA digs leader Clare Weisser had a match-high 15 digs.

For Boreal, it was Alexandra Albert who paced the team with four kills. Erica Pomeroy had two kills, one ace, a block and four digs. Josie-Ann Langelier had seven digs to lead the Vipers.

As a team, Seneca amassed 38 kills to just 10 for Boreal. Seneca held an 8-1 advantage in serving aces while Boreal had eight more digs for the match.

The Seneca Sting (8-8) will travel to play the George Brown Huskies (1-14) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. while the Boreal Vipers (0-14) will play at George Brown (1-14) tomorrow at 1 p.m.
