DURHAM 3, ALGONQUIN 2

OSHAWA, Ont. – In a match that could have gone either way, the Durham College women's volleyball team ended up earning their 14th straight win as they defeated the Algonquin 3-2 on Friday night.

The win was the Lords 15th of the season with the set scores of 25-16, 30-32, 18-25, 25-17 and 16-14.

The Lords serving made a big difference in the match as they finished 14 aces while the Thunder only had six. Despite the point differential from the service line, the Thunder were able to hang with the first place Lords and remain in striking distance all night long.

Meghan Renwick of Brooklin finished the match with six aces while Leah Saar of Pickering had an astonishing 18 kills, two aces, one block and 11 digs. Saar is second in OCAA East region scoring averaging 3.5 points per set.

With the Lords easily earning a 25-16 set victory in the opening set, the second set featured one of the longest of the season in which both teams traded punches all the way into the 30s. Unfortunately for the Lords, they could not capitalize on some golden opportunities which led to the Thunder taking the set by a score of 32-30.

After dropping set three by a score of 25-18, the Lords managed to bounce back with a 25-17 win to force a fifth and final set.

Thanks to some clutch plays by Durham down the stretch, the Lords were able to finish off the Thunder 16-14 in the final set to win their 15th match of the season.

Colleen McRobert (Whitby, Ont.) recorded 14 digs in the win while Natasha Jakovljevic (Oshawa, Ont.) and Rayan Bourne (Whitby, Ont.) combined for 22 points.

Key players for the Thunder included Breann Wheeler who had seven kills and three blocks in the loss while Nicole O'Donoughue had five kills and nine digs.
