CAMBRIAN 3, TRENT 0

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship host Trent Excalibur were eliminated from the competition by the Cambrian Golden Shield in game six of the tournament, falling in three straight sets – 26-24, 25-21 and 25-20.

With both teams looking to improve on their first day of play, the first set commenced with Cambrian jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead before the Excalibur women got their bearings. Cambrian set the pace with some strong offence as they kept the pressure on Trent early pushing to a 10-3 lead coming out of a timeout by Trent. The Excalibur battled back with some tough serving by Sarah Norton (Arnprior, Ont.) and Erin Clancy (Woodbridge, Ont.) keeping the score tight at 12-15 midway through the set. Trent grabbed their first lead at 17-16 after some strong defensive play forcing Cambrian to call a timeout. Trent came out swinging after the Cambrian timeout moving ahead to 21-17 as they attempted to close out the set. Cambrian found new life after their second timeout and reclaimed the lead, taking an extremely close set 26-24.

The second set started with both teams displaying strong offence and defence as they exchanged points all the way up to 10-10. Neither team could gain the upper hand as the score sat at 13-12 for Cambrian midway through the set. Cambrian gained some momentum late in the set as they moved forward to 23-19 lead. Mira van Burck (Star City, Sask.) tried to get the lead back for Trent with some great hitting and serving but the Excalibur ended up falling short losing the second set 25-21 to trail behind 2-0 in the match.

Trent had a stronger showing at the beginning of the third set getting out to an early 12-10 lead. However, Cambrian stayed strong throughout and claimed the lead at 15-14 midway through the set. Trent gave a strong effort to reclaim their lead and stay in the match but Cambrian ended up out matching the Excalibur and took the third set 25-20 and the match in three straight sets.
The Player of the Game for Cambrian was setter Jillian Shell (Lively, Ont.) who distributed the ball well amongst her team and the Player of the Game for Trent was Sara Rettie (Newmarket, Ont.) with five kills, four blocks and one dig.

The host Trent Excalibur are now eliminated from the tournament. Next action for the Golden Shield will be Saturday at 9 a.m. against the losing team of the Nipissing-Redeemer game scheduled for Friday evening.
